2000-2001 Campaign Log: Part 21

It’s been several weeks since the last segment of the annotated log of the first campaign of Strategic Primer, so it’s time for another installment.

Player Name Date Unit Attempted Action Result of Action
Xenophon 2/26/01 Units at Northport Begin/continue construction of a Junk, equipped with lasers. Construction started.
Xenophon 2/26/01 All Junks Equip with Lasers. Done

I gather that by this time I wasn’t routinely recording new advances in the log anymore; in hindsight that was a mistake. I should also mention, and this is as good a place as any, that for a long time in “the middle period” equipment that wasn’t a unit or a tile improvement was usually represented as a “General Advance” and included a line like “When discovered, automatically installed on all relevant units” in its text, much like Xenophon’s orders here, except required by the advance itself. In the year or so before the current campaign started, I came to my senses and decided to abandon that pattern; there are still a lot of advances that haven’t been converted yet, but now no such change should be made without orders from the player or one of the commanders under him or her.

Xenophon 2/26/01 Legion 1 & Cavalry 1 Go to Southport. (about 171 mi). Moved correctly 1 hr (30 mi) . Moved correctly 1 hr (30 mi) . Bogged down. Moved correctly 1 hr (30 mi). Moved correctly 1 hr (30 mi). Bogged down. Moved correctly 1 hr (30 mi). Moved correctly 1 hr (30 mi). Moved correctly the rest of the way (about 21 mi).
Xenophon 2/26/01 Legion 2 Move from Southburg to Southport. (about 286 mi). Bogged down. Moved correctly 1 hr (22 mi). Moved out of step 1 hr (22 mi). Moved out of step 1 hr (22 mi). Moved correctly 1 hr (22 mi). Moved correctly 1 hr (22 mi). Moved correctly 1 hr (22 mi). Moved out of step 1 hr (22 mi). Total: 286 mi.

In retrospect, I probably should have advised against naming one fortress “Southburg” and the other “Southport” …

Xenophon 2/26/01 None HQ begin production of legionnaires. Construction started.

Producing a legion … when the ships are armed with lasers? I’m not sure I see the thinking there …

Arthur Pendragon 2/26/01 None Send spies to steal the secret of the computer chip, the flint-gun, the flint-cannon, and the paracannon. Theft of military secrets failed.

As I mentioned last month, I don’t remember how I determined the result of espionage. But this clearly rules out the “automatic success” hypothesis.

Sometimes the (virtual) dice are really against you …

As an aside, I don’t remember why this next item was separated from the rest of Xenophon’s turn.

Xenophon 2/26/01 Mounted Crossbows 3 & 4, Aerial Scout 1 Continue. (about 235 mi to the coast.). Moved correctly 1 hr (68 mi).Moved correctly 1 hr (68 mi).Moved correctly 1 hr (68 mi).Moved out of step the rest of the way (about 31 mi).
End of 2/26/01

That was the end of the turn, and it’s also the end of that “volume” of the log; only one more “volume” remains, and it’s very short. So the log will conclude next month.
