2000-2001 Campaign Log: Part 14

It’s been about a month since the last segment of the annotated log of the first campaign of Strategic Primer, so it’s time for another installment—beginning, as promised, with the player code-named Arthur Pendragon.

Player Name Date Unit Attempted Action Result of Action
Arthur Pendragon 2/20/01 Rail Cannon 1 Launch Rail Cannon 2 to fort by Wellington’s HQ; launch Riflemen 4 to camp by Robert E. Lee’s HQ. Rail Cannon 2 launch succeeded. Riflemen 4: launch failed, launch failed, launch succeeded.
Arthur Pendragon 2/20/01 Rail Cannon 2 Land at fort. (Start 2 hrs in) Forced to pull up, crashed. 1 man died.
Arthur Pendragon 2/20/01 Rail Cannon 2 Launch Riflemen 5 to camp by Robert E. Lee’s HQ. Launched correctly.
Arhur Pendragon 2/20/01 Riflemen 4 and 5 Land at camp by Robert E. Lee’s HQ. (start 5 hrs in). Riflemen 4: landed correctly. Riflemen 5: forced to pull up. Landed correctly.

Once rail cannons, parachutes, and such were available (since, again, I was so very lax in enforcing even plausibility), this became the fastest form of transportation … though of course it was more dangerous. Arthur’s tactic of launching a rail cannon a short distance to make fast transport of a different unit possible is interesting. (But while I nominally kept track of time used, I don’t think I had launches take different amounts of time based on how many people a unit contained, as I should have.)

Xenophon 2/20/01 Scout 1 and Horse-drawn Catapult 1 Start building boats (2 junks), recruit sailors + fortify port. Done, 2 tns. remaining on Junk.

Building a fortification is now, of course, a somewhat more involved proposition. And, as I’ve noted in previous installments, Xenophon was perhaps the only person involved (of all the players and me to consider recruitment as part of unit construction.

Xenophon 2/20/01 Legion 2 Continue NE to water (about 71 mi). Camp. Moved correctly 2 hrs (20 mi). Moved correctly 2 hrs (20 mi). Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved correctly 2 hrs (20 mi). Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved correctly the rest of the way (11 mi).
Xenophon 2/20/01 None None Robert E. Lee’s former HQ is now dubbed “Old Leetown”

Every fortress has to be called something

Xenophon 2/20/01 Mounted Longbowmen Move SW from HQ to meet Scout 3 (128 1/2 mi.) Move correctly 2 hrs (64 mi). Moved correctly a little more than 2 hrs (64.5 mi). Waited.
Xenophon 2/20/01 Scout 3 & Mounted Longbowmen Move W. (at Mounted Longbowmen’s speed. Starting 6 hrs 10 min in. Ed.) Moved out of step 2 hrs (64 mi). Moved correctly 2 hrs (64 mi). Moved correctly 2 hrs (64 mi). Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Total distance: 192 mi.

As I’ve noted before, in those days I was very concerned about units staying in step and in formation. Nowadays … not so much.

Xenophon 2/20/01 Crossbow 2 Fortify Fastport, sail Junks around Done
Xenophon 2/20/01 Mounted Crossbowmen 1 and Catapult 5 Stay in Southburg, recruit legionaires Done
George Washington 2/20/01 Messengers None None. Messengers have seen a great army, armed with gas masks, coming toward George’s HQ from the WSW.

Minimal automatic scouting like this, which I did occasionally, was a nice touch; unfortunately, it’d quite hard to do in the present campaign (with the tools I’m currently using).

All that remains for the turn is a roundup of the remaining players:

Marcus Tullius Cicero 2/20/01 None None None. Rabble produced. Producing Rabble, 2 turns remaining.
Robert E. Lee 2/20/01 None None None. Finished Rabble. Currently producing Rabble, 2 turns remaining.
Pape 2/20/01 None None None
Wellington 2/20/01 Messengers None His messengers have sighted great armies surrounding his HQ.
Panzier 2/20/01 Rabble 1 None. Rabble 1 has become a Mounted Longbowmen.
End of 2/20/01

And we’ll end this installment there; another will follow next month.
