2000-2001 Campaign Log: Part 8

Today we continue the annotated log of the first campaign of Strategic Primer, which I continued last month with the beginning of the third turn, dated February 17, 2001. We continue the log of that turn today.

Player Name Date Unit Attempted Action Result of Action
Xenophon 2/17/01 Crossbow 1 Move to Robert E. Lee’s HQ. Moved correctly almost 1 hr (13 mi).
Xenophon 2/17/01 Crossbow 2 Move E to shoreline and investigate boat building. Move out of step for 2 hrs (28 mi). Moved corectly 2 hrs (28 mi). Moved out of step for 2 hrs (28 mi). Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved correctly rest of the way (2 mi). Built rafts for the rest of the day and tested them.
Xenophon 2/17/01 Legion 2 None Fortress now named Legiontown.

This is the first example of a fortress other than a player’s headquarters being explicitly named; in subsequent campaigns, players have to give names to all fortresses they construct, and I recently added names to every town and village on the world map I’m using for the current campaign.

Xenophon 2/17/01 Legion 1 Move to Robert E. Lee’s HQ. (90 mi WNW. Quickly. Ed.) Move correctly 2 hrs (40 mi). Moved out of step 2 hrs (40 mi). Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved correctly 2 hrs (40 mi). Moved correctly 2 hrs (40 mi). Moved out of step 2 hrs (40 mi). Moved out of step 2 hrs (40 mi). Bogged down. Moved out of step 1 1/2 hrs (30 mi). Total distance: 270 mi. 22 mi E of Robert’s HQ, 2 mi N.
Xenophon 2/17/01 Rabble 1 None Rabble 1 has become Mounted Longbowmen 1.

In that campaign, a “Rabble” unit became a unit or units of the player’s choice (consisting of no more “crew” than the Rabble’s number) after two turns. With no more limitations than that, this mechanic was “broken”; in its place, units can have “Rabble levels”, a part of their progression before they’ve really been trained or had any experience.

Xenophon 2/17/01 Mounted Longbowmen 1 Stay in HQ. Done
Xenophon 2/17/01 Rabble 2 None. Rabble 2 is now a Mounted Crossbowmen.
Xenophon 2/17/01 Mounted Crossbowmen 1 & Catapult 2 Fortify. Begin recruiting Scouts. Done.
Xenophon 2/17/01 Catapult 1 Move to Robert E. Lee’s HQ and attack its gates. (484 mi W Quickly. Ed.) Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved correctly 4 hrs (80 mi). Moves correctly 4 hrs (80 mi). Moves correctly 4 hrs (80 mi). Moves correctly 4 hrs (80 mi). Moved correctly 4 hrs (80 mi). Bogged down. Moved correctly 1 1/2 hrs (30 mi). Total moved: 350 mi. Remaining: 134.
Xenophon 2/17/01 Aerial Scout 1 Move to Robert E. Lee’s HQ, provide info on enemy movements. (90 mi WNW. Ed.) Moved correctly 3 hrs (90 mi).

I didn’t really have a good way to record, let alone report, other players’ movements—and I still don’t have a good way, though I’m working on it.

Xenophon 2/17/01 Scout 1 Survey and Recruit around HQ. Done.

Actually, I didn’t do much in the way of running recruiting, though I think I did provide an expanded map.

Xenophon 2/17/01 Cavalry 1 Move to Robert E. Lee’s HQ. (90 mi WNW. Ed.) Moved correctly 1 hr (30 mi). Bogged down. Moved correctly 1 hr (30 mi). Bogged down. Moved correctly 1 hr (30 mi). Joined with Crossbow 1 and Mounted Crossbowmen 2.

Xenophon 2/17/01 Mounted Crossbowmen 2 Move S to Robert E. Lee’s HQ, with Crossbowmen 1. Done.

We’ll end this installment of the log here, having completed Xenophon’s strategy for the turn,, and pick up again in the next installment with Arthur Pendragon’s turn.
