2000-2001 Campaign Log: Part 6

Today I’m continuing the annotated log of the first campaign of Strategic Primer, which I last updated in January.

Player Name Date Unit Attempted Action Result of Action
Arthur Pendragon 2/16/01 Crossbowmen 1 Move SE for 18 mi, then move S until just out of sight of an enemy fort and then camp Bogged down. Moved correctly 1 hr (14 mi). Bogged down. Moved out of step rest of 18 mi (4 mi, about 1/2 hr). Rested rest of hr. Moved out of step 1 hr (14 mi). Camped.
Arthur Pendragon 2/16/01 Catapults 1 & 2, Legion 1 & 2 Follow in Crossbowmen 1’s footsteps. (Quickly. Ed.) Moved correctly 2 hrs (40 mi). Moved correctly 2 hrs (40 mi). Moved correctly 2 hrs (40 mi). Moved correctly 2 hrs (40 mi). Moved out of step rest of way to turning point and rested until at an exact 1/2 hr (4 hrs). Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved out of step for 18 mi and rested for rest of hr. (1 hr). Moved, pushing themselves, rest of way (14 mi). Lost 10 min of sleep.
Arthur Pendragon 2/16/01 Rabble 1 Follow in Crossbowmen 1’s footsteps. (Quickly. Ed.) Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved out of step for 3 hrs (24 mi). Moved out of step for 3 hrs (24 mi). Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved correctly for 3 hrs (24 mi). Bogged down. Moved out of step for 3 hrs (24 mi). Moved correctly for 1 hr (8 mi). Total distance: 104 mi.

Here we can see, again, my excessive fascination with time details, and my willingness to be (probably unreasonably) flexible in favor of a strategy that I thought of as strong. Unless, as is possible, this was an “AI” (how else would Arthur have known about the enemy fortress?) …

Robert E. Lee 2/16/01 Rabble 1 Move due N as far as possible Moved correctly about 3 1/2 hrs (13 mi). Met Xenophon’s Crossbow 1 and challenged it. Charged and was not immediately beaten back. Knocked out.

I think this may actually have been an error, due to the way I was running the strategies “by hand” with no helper programs yet; in retrospect I’m fairly sure that Xenophon’s crossbowmen unit and Lee’s rabble were actually nowhere near each other. But once I said this, it stood.

Robert E. Lee 2/16/01 Rabble 2 Move due E as far as possible Moved out of step for 4 hrs (16 mi). Bogged down. Moved correctly 4 hrs (16 mi). Bogged down. Moved out of step 4 hrs (16 mi). Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved correctly for 1/2 hr (2 mi). Bogged down. Total distance: 50 mi.
Robert E. Lee 2/16/01 Legion 1 Move due S as far as possible. Moved correctly 4 hrs (40 mi). Moved out of step 4 hrs (40 mi). Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved correctly 4 hrs (40 mi). Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Bogged down. Moved correctly 1 hr (10 mi). Total distance: 130 mi.
Robert E. Lee 2/16/01 Legion 2 Move as far W as possible. Bogged down. Moved correctly 4 (40 mi). Bogged down. Moved out of step 4 hrs (40 mi). Moved out of step 4 hrs (40 mi). Moved correctly 1 1/2 hrs (15 mi). Bogged down. Total distance: 135 mi.
END OF 2/16/01

Robert E. Lee looks to be betting everything on exploration …

And that’s a good stopping place; we’ll pick up with the next turn next month.
